William J. McRae - The Wonder of God’s Forgiveness

Back to Devotionals Page

Stumbling on an amazing verse in the Bible a number of years ago I realized for the first time just what it meant for God to forgive me.

“In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Ephesians 1:7 This precious text highlights four aspects of the wonder of God’s forgiveness when we personally invite Jesus Christ into our life to become our Saviour.

  1. He forgives us ALL our willful, deliberate, persistent offenses against Him. It’s so interesting that in forgiving others who have offended us, we wrestle with distinguishing between the little and the big offences, the first or the tenth time someone has hurt us. Not so with God; small and big, first or tenth, past or future, our sins are ALL forgiven!
    (Colossians 3:13; 1 John 1:7)

Plato once wrote: “It may be that the gods can forgive deliberate sin, but how, I do not know.”

  2. God did it by laying the penalty of our offenses, (our guilt), upon His Son. Through Christ’s substitutionary death, we have been released (redeemed) from the consequences of our sin. Amazing!!

  3. God offers this to us absolutely free. It’s a gift of His grace, received simply by faith – by believing Jesus died for me. Even more amazing!

  4. And perhaps most amazing – I have it now. “In Him we have redemption..” Such assurance gives us confidence with God, frees our conscience, inspires worship, delivers us from fear, fill us with hope and prompts service.

Hear this wonderful verse again in the New Living Translation of the Bible:

“God is so rich in kindness that He purchased our freedom through the blood of His Son, and our sins are forgiven.”
Ephesians 1:7 (NLT)

This should be our response:

“Remember the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
Colossians 3:13b (NLT)
